Hammerson is a FTSE 100 owner, manager and developer of retail destinations in Europe. Back in 2002, Amalgam designed the public toilets for the £500m Bullring Shopping Development in Birmingham, UK. And in 2015 Hammerson commissioned Amalgam again to develop a new ‘Premium Washrooms concept’.
The new concept aims to meet Hammerson’s brief “to provide 5-star facilities across our portfolio which will give our shoppers a world-class experience”. The first ‘pilot’ schemes have recently opened adjacent to Selfridges in the Bullring. The facilities are on two floors and include Female, Male, Unisex disabled / baby change blocks, as well as a new Changing Places facility.
Hammerson asked Ian to put together a team which drew on the range of specialisms within the Amalgam studio. The Architectural Design team; Ian Gunter, Mark Malindine, Agnieszka Jakubowska, Hanna Levy, Aleksandrina Rizova, Diego Repiso and Anisha Matthew, worked with Graphic Designer Paul Gallagher, and Product designer Brian Watson of Wills & Watson.
LED light panels, set into a coffered ceiling simulate natural light.
Large format marble effect porcelain panels and white gold fused stainless steel cubicle doors and panels are high quality and robust enough to stand the rigours of constant use.
Touch-less taps, soap dispensers and hand driers are set into an engineered stone washstand with large backlit mirror above.
Cubicles have solid, floor to ceiling porcelain and fused Stainless steel clad partitions and doors.
Design Guidelines have been developed in conjunction with the pilot projects, and these will evolve through the proposed estate-wide roll-out through 2017 > 2018.
